How to Make a Paper Amaryllis: A Step-by-Step Tutorial
Welcome back, crafters! This is Sara, and today, I’m excited to show you how to make a stunning paper amaryllis. Whether you’re crafting for Lunar New Year, Valentine’s Day, or just to add a touch of elegance to your space, this project is perfect for you. Let’s get started!
Supplies Needed
Paper Amaryllis Template- https://www.handmadebysarakim.com/digital-templates/amaryllis
22-gauge floral wire
White floral tape
Cutting machine (Cricut, Silhouette, etc.) or scissors for hand-cutting
Green tissue paper
Brown cardstock paper
Aluminum foil
Masking tape
Note: All supplies are also listed on the template page.
Step 1: Creating the Center
Cut 7 pieces of 22-gauge wire.
Use pliers to form a small loop at the top of each wire.
Cover the loop with white floral tape, extending the tape down the wire to about the height of the petals.
Use a yellow acrylic marker to color the loop area and lightly stroke the rest of the wire with light green. Set these aside to dry.
Step 2: Shaping the Petals
Print the petal template onto blush pink cardstock. For a traditional red amaryllis, skip printing and use solid red cardstock.
Curl the printed side of the petals inward and the tops outward for both sets of 3 petals.
Step 3: Assembling the Flower
Once the wires are dry, bend them slightly forward and floral tape them together.
Attach the first set of 3 petals around the wire center, securing them with floral tape or glue. Arrange them in a triangular pattern.
Add the second set of 3 petals in between the first set.
Wrap about 1-2 inches of floral tape below the flower; no need to cover the entire wire yet.
Step 4: Making the Leaves
Pair up leaves of various sizes and slightly crease them down the center.
Apply white glue around one leaf, insert a floral wire halfway, and sandwich it with the second leaf. Shape the leaf by curling the tips inward or outward before the glue fully dries.
Step 5: Creating a Bud
Shape 3 petals by curling them tightly inward and slightly curling the tops.
Attach these petals directly to a thicker floral wire without a center, keeping them close together.
Step 6: Final Assembly
Create 3 full flowers and one bud with accompanying leaves.
Attach the flowers to a thicker floral stem, leaving 1-2 inches of the stem visible. Floral tape them in place.
Use green tissue paper to thicken the stem and wrap it with floral tape for a realistic appearance. Repeat this for the bud.
Attach the bud and flowers together at the bottom and add the leaves close to the base.
Step 7: Optional Bulb Base
Roll a strip of brown cardstock into a cylinder wide enough to fit the stem.
Attach it to a Styrofoam ball using leftover cardstock strips as tabs.
Mold aluminum foil around the ball, flattening the bottom so it stands upright.
Cover the foil with masking tape.
Apply brown tissue paper to the ball using matte Mod Podge, layering it for texture. Let it dry completely.
Trim the stem and cylinder to fit the bulb, and insert the flower.
Tips and Variations
For a classic look, use solid red petals.
These flowers make beautiful gifts for Lunar New Year and Valentine’s Day.
